How to Quickly Clean Out Your Yahoo Inbox

After writing the article on how to clean out your Hotmail inbox using their Sweep feature, I decided to take a quick look at my good ol’ Yahoo inbox to see if it hid a similar feature. Sure enough, it did! Although you won’t find it listed under sweep, with just a couple of clicks you can delete all of the emails in your Yahoo inbox rather easily. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Login to your Yahoo email account.
  2. Navigate to your Yahoo inbox. If you are a Yahoo Mail Classic user and haven’t already switched over to the All-New Yahoo Mail design, you should do that first. You should see a link on top-right portion of the page that says “Try the new Yahoo Mail”. If you don’t like the new design, you can always switch back to Yahoo Mail Classic.Try the New Yahoo Mail
  3. Once you’re in your inbox, look for the Actions button and left-click.
  4. A drop-down menu will appear with several actions you can choose from. Since we want to completely erase all of the emails in our Yahoo Mail inbox at the same time, we’ll choose the “Select All Emails” option by left-clicking on the action. This will select all of the emails in your inbox.Yahoo Mail Actions
  5. Look for the Move button (to the left of the Actions button) and left-click on it.
  6. A drop-down menu will appear showing all of the places where you can move the selected emails to. Since we want to “clean sweep” our Yahoo Mail inbox, we’ll opt to send everything to the TrashYahoo Mail Trash

That’s it – you’re done! Now all of the junk email messages you had in your Yahoo inbox are now tucked away in your Yahoo Mail trash. If you want to delete them right away, simply empty your trash or wait for the Yahoo system to automatically take care of that for you.

That is all well and good for 25 to 200 at a time. But I had over 3000. So I changed the view to scrolling without preview pane and it gave me the entire list. Then I selected all with the checkbox up top left and deleted everything at one.

Thanks for that, I had over 4000! and was pretty daunted by doing them in blocks of 200, as for some reason Yahoo hates it and crashes. Now I have a lovely clean inbox again.

Simply click on "scrolling list of messages below" on the option second to the right, next to the wheel icon which states to "rearrange". Then click on delete all, above messages…and they will be GONE!!!! YAY!!!

  12. It would appear that with the latest yahoo facelift (approx November 2012) that even if "scrolling list of messages" is ticked, that the view is limited to 200 messages, then click to the next page.

  13. Is there a simple, painless way to mark approx 20,000 messages as "read" please

I don't want to delete ALL messages at one time BUT I would like to know how to delete all messages from certain senders all at one time. I use to be able to do that. I would do a search for all emails from JC Pennys and then when they would come up I could mark them all for deletion then I would pull up another senders emails and delete all of them. It gave me more control. Now I can pull them all up but it won't let me delete them………..what's up? Now what do I do??

    • Bob Barcus says:

I'm not sure why it wouldn't work that way you described. I did a quick search in the new Yahoo Mail for emails from Microsoft. It displayed 6 messages, so I went to the checkbox at the top of the left column and selected "All" from the drop-down menu. Then I clicked on the "Delete" button in the purple bar. Yahoo Mail places a strike-through across the email subject, indicating that the message has been deleted (thus moving it into your trash folder). However, if you go back to your inbox, the messages should be gone. If you do a search for a particular sender again, the messages will appear with a strike-through because the messages are still technically in one of your mail folders. To get rid of them completely, you'll need to empty your trash folder by hovering over the trash folder. A trash icon will appear to the right, click on it and click "OK" when prompted.

My yahoo doesn't look like either of these versions mentioned above, I am confused. How do I delete about 5 thousand e mails at once?

  22. Bob Barcus says:

Yahoo has changed significantly since I first wrote this article over three years ago. I'll try to get an updated how-to in the near future. With 5,000 emails, that's pretty significant…
